When you are called to lead, you are called to serve. This is a powerful message we share with our boys, and it underpins our leadership philosophy in the Prep School. Leadership is a valuable skill that is beneficial in all aspects of life. In the Prep School, learning to lead and serve others is a philosophy we engender with all boys. We believe that all students have the potential to develop leadership skills, and we encourage the boys to apply these leadership skills to initiatives that strengthen our school community.
To facilitate the boys’ growth and development in the Prep School, there are a variety of learning-to-lead opportunities. In the first instance, we ask boys to lead themselves. We encourage them to do the little things well, such as wear their uniform correctly, tip their hat, use their manners, be on time to class and be prepared—all the ‘one percenters’ that make a significant difference. Once they have the ability to lead themselves, they have opportunities to lead others through introductory roles as Class Captains. This provides their first step in leading others and allows for growth and development in the leadership space. Further opportunities await in the cocurricular arena, with activity captains for sports and music—another opportunity to learn to lead. Within the new Prep School house system, we will provide additional opportunities for boys to develop their leadership skills. With a vertical system in place, the younger boys will be able to look to our older boys as leaders within their house, and this will be formalised through the opportunity to become a house captain or vice-captain.
Last Thursday, we celebrated and inducted our 10 Prep School student leaders at our Leadership Assembly. These fine young men embody the leadership philosophy of the Prep School. They have proven to their peers that they can lead themselves and have the ability to serve and lead others. We look forward to their individual and collective contributions. I am confident that they will serve our school community with distinction.
In a world where leadership skills are becoming increasingly important, we believe our boys deserve to be equipped with the leadership skills they need to make a positive impact on our school community and beyond the gates of Churchie. With an ever-evolving society, we can prepare our boys with the necessary skills to make a positive impact.

The Churchie Parents Advisory Association (CPAA) communicates between the parent body and the School Executive and School Council and provides advice based on the information it gathers. All parents and guardians of Churchie students are automatically members of the CPAA.
The CPAA AGM was held on 29 January, with attendees both in person and by Microsoft Teams. The agenda and chair’s report are available on the CPAA’s myChurchie page, and the minutes of the meeting will be posted in the coming weeks.
We are pleased to announce the CPAA executive members who have been appointed by School Council for 2024:
The next CPAA general meeting will be on Tuesday 7 May at 6 pm in Nichols Theatre. All parents and carers are welcome to attend. We welcome all questions, concerns and feedback on any issue from parents. Please contact any of the executive members listed above or use the form on our myChurchie page to get in touch.
Cooperation is working together and sharing the load. When we cooperate, we join with others to do things that cannot be done alone. We are willing to follow the rules that keep everyone safe and happy. Together we can accomplish great things.
When you are principled, you act with integrity and honesty, with a strong sense of fairness, justice and respect for the dignity of the individual, groups and communities. You take responsibility for your own actions and the consequences that accompany them.
Writing, reading and vocabulary fun! Year 2A has blasted off to an amazing start using tier two vocabulary in sentences. They have been brainstorming and segmenting words on their whiteboards. As well as reading new and exciting books and creating visualisations using the clues in the text. We can’t wait for week two to continue our learning journey.

Warm greetings to you all! I am delighted to have the opportunity to connect with you through this newsletter. As the school counsellor, I am here to assist and support your child’s journey through the Churchie Preparatory School.
Firstly, I want to let you know that I am present on Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday, working across all grades except for Year 3. Additionally, we are fortunate to have Senior School Educational Psychologist Lisa Andersen, who will be working in the Prep School on Thursday mornings and Friday during the middle session for the Year 3 cohort. During this time, Lisa will also handle acute cases across the entire school.
In addressing the wellbeing of your children, I want to emphasise that, in the first instance, class teachers are the most appropriate people to handle concerns related to friendships, emotional awareness, a positive sense of self, and belonging. To support them in this endeavour, we have introduced Circle Solutions in all grades and Switch for Schools in Years 3 to 6. It’s noteworthy that these programmes are well-researched, evidence-based initiatives dedicated to enhancing wellbeing amongst our students.
We will also be actively involved, periodically working with teachers and classes on these important issues, as well as conducting sessions with students on child safety matters. Small-group counselling sessions will be facilitated when specific needs are identified across cohorts, such as helping students initiate new friendships or assisting students in dealing with conflict in the playground. You will always be notified if your child has been identified for additional support and of course, have the right to decline.
Most of our work will involve one-to-one sessions with students who have been identified by class teachers, parents, and housemasters. Our approach here is to offer four to six sessions for students with acute needs, following the trial of class-wide and house-wide strategies where appropriate. While most matters will follow the regular communication channels, urgent or highly confidential concerns may reach us directly. Following four to six sessions, if additional support is needed, we’ll refer out and collaborate with external providers. This enables us to ensure we are available for all students across the entire school year.
I’m excited to share that we have a fantastic resource called SchoolTV, accessible on myChurchie and introduced last year. This platform provides a wealth of well-being resources specifically for parents. This includes books, podcasts and videos on mental health issues such as eating disorders, anxiety, ADHD and gaming addictions. Articles from leading psychologists and educators on behaviour management, homework routines, friendships and school refusal are also at your fingertips on SchoolTV. I strongly encourage you to explore it when you can find some time or if you encounter challenges at home at any stage.
If you have any concerns or questions, please don’t hesitate to reach out. Our contact details are on myChurchie or you are most welcome to phone the Prep School office and they will connect you.

Guidance Counsellor

In keeping with school policy, if your son needs to take medication while at school, the medication must be administered by our Health Centre staff. Medication should be in its original packaging with clear directions for its administration and a note from the parent. Please provide this to your son’s form teacher, who will ensure that it is provided to the Health Centre.
The Prep School’s JB Adams Library is open for general borrowing and library use each day:
It was lovely to see the boys enjoying their first week back at school.

I commend our Senior School students who have been wearing their uniforms correctly this year so far. Thank you to parents and guardians for your support in upholding Churchie’s high standards in this regard.
I would like to draw your attention to the rules pertaining to school bags on campus.
The Churchie schoolbag is a mandatory part of the school uniform, for all students, and is used daily. Where necessary, for Health and Physical Education (HPE) lessons or cocurricular activities, boys may use a Churchie sports bag or Churchie backpack.
However, the Churchie sports bag or backpack may only be carried between classes if a student is directly moving from, or going to a HPE class. For example, a boy with an HPE lesson in period two will take his Churchie sports bag or Churchie backpack to period one. That bag should then be stored in his locker at recess for the remainder of the day. Where students are using a Churchie sports bag or Churchie backpack without good reason, staff will address this and administer a sanction as necessary. A small number of boys have special dispensation to use their bags and will have a suitable note from the housemaster.
Furthermore, please note that no other bags (including sporting team representative bags) are to be used at school. Any such bag will be confiscated, to be collected from MS25 in the same manner as mobile phones, resulting in a Friday detention.

Study Hub is a great way for students to access support with their classwork and assignments, access library resources, or just have a quiet place to work. In all cases, students are required to come up with specific tasks to complete or with questions to ask.
Support and supervision are provided by teachers, teacher aides, students and Old Boys.
The goals for Study Hub are:

I hope all students have settled into their school routines. For many students, lessons have begun and ensemble rehearsals are in full swing. If you still haven’t been contacted by your conductor or private tutor, please make contact with the Head of Bands, Head of Strings or Choral Director.
Please make every effort to work with our exceptional teaching staff. Scheduling and room allocation are not easily flexible and while we will do our best to assist, it is a combined effort to commit to lessons in order to have the privilege of a great musical education. Lesson times are visible on myChurchie if you need to check and I’d encourage parents to read the available information on myChurchie if you have any queries. As always, we are here to help, and we look forward to a great year ahead.
On Monday 29 January, students from Churchie participated in their first rehearsal for the GPS Music Day of Excellence. Students formed a symphony orchestra, concert band, big band and choir with other selected students from the GPS schools. Each ensemble had a guest conductor and carefully selected repertoire. From all reports, the first rehearsal was a great success and although there is plenty of work to be done, the students now have an understanding of the music and the areas for improvement. The concert will be held at BBC’s College Hall on Thursday 8 February 2024. Tickets will be available to the general public via the following link:
This is a reminder to the parents of participating students to purchase your tickets before they go live for public sale on Thursday 1 February at 5 pm.
If you would like to be considered for GPS music in the future, please talk to your teacher about sitting an appropriate AMEB grade – this is the rubric most used to select students from each of the GPS schools.

In addition to the Japan article in the newsletter for Week 1, Churchie was able to engage the services of a professional photographer for the Tokyo leg of the journey. Below is a selection from our visit to Keio School (Japan’s 2023 National Baseball Championship School) and Churchie’s amazing public performance at Tokyo Disney Sea in front of the Christmas tree at Ikspiari Plaza. These are lifelong memories and for those eligible in 2027, start planning your journey to be a part of this amazing opportunity.

Following the success of the recent Japan tour for bands, the opportunity for strings and choral students to tour and play music at the Musikverein in Vienna is just over one year away. The chance to tour overseas with an ensemble is very rare and relies on the participation of each member to create a wonderful ensemble sound. The tour will extend to various sights and iconic locations throughout Vienna and Germany. All high-level and aspiring strings and choral students in Years 8 to 12 in 2025 are invited to attend the Music Support Group Welcome and Launch of the tour on Thursday 15 February 2024 in The Centenary Library lecture theatre at 6 pm. If you have any further inquiries, please email Head of Strings Ben Hooper or Choral Director Rosemary Oxenford. As a taste of what is to come, the video below shows the 2011 Music Festival in Vienna, in which Churchie was a participant.

The Music Calendar Launch and Welcome is a wonderful opportunity for students and their parents to come along and meet other parents and students within the music community, especially if you are new to the School or in Year 7. The evening will serve as an opportunity to view slides from the recent Japan Music Tour and collect information on the next tour to Mt Gambier in 2024 and the Europe Tour in 2025. You will also receive some wonderful information on the music calendar events followed by an opportunity to share some food and drinks with the parent and student community courtesy of the Music Support Group. The event will take place in The Centenary Library lecture theatre on Thursday 15 February.

Director of Music
On Saturday, our teams persevered through high temperatures and strong competition for our first GPS round of the year against Brisbane Grammar School (BGS) at home. BGS presented robust opponents, but our cricketers, volleyballers and debaters duly rose to the challenge. We look forward to another healthy GPS competition this Saturday, against Gregory Terrace with away games in round two.
I invite you to view the round one results on the myChurchie GPS Sports and Activities page.

Churchie Rowing had a fantastic first GPS regatta hosted by St Joseph’s Nudgee College.
Podium results across all age groups were capped off by second in the Open First VIII and first in the Year 10 Eighth and Year 9 Tenth quads.
The depth of our programme was evident from the start. With 13 Year 9 quads, the most of any school, we’re laying the foundation for a strong boat shed in the years ahead.
Our crews are already back training on the river and building on their success or working on delivering an improved result this week as BGS hosts Regatta 2. Hopefully, the weather is kind to us and we can get through a full programme of racing out at the dam!
Tyson Sholl
Director of Rowing

Saturday saw the commencement of the 2024 GPS Cricket Season, with Churchie taking on Brisbane Grammar School (BGS) across all matches on the weekend.
In incredibly hot conditions, the boys of the blue and grey performed extremely well against the elements to enjoy the better part of the day, winning 17 of the 28 matches that were played. Most impressively, Churchie won seven of the eight A team fixtures, with only a narrow defeat by the 8As preventing a clean sweep of wins at the A level. The standout result was 9A’s impressive 109-run win, after posting an imposing 6/228 with the bat. It was an outstanding start to the season by our A teams.
For the First XI’s season opener on Main Oval, the ground staff had done a remarkable job given the recent wet weather. Winning the toss and electing to bat (the first time since 2021 that a Churchie First XI had batted first), the team fought well against tight BGS bowling and a very slow outfield to post a competitive 8/162. The innings were led by 45 from Tighe Morris, while debutant Daniel Desmet (31) and Captain Jayden Draper (28) made key contributions.
With the ball, Churchie started well, taking four wickets in the first 10 overs to leave BGS reeling at 4/22. A strong 44-run fifth-wicket partnership saw BGS fight their way back into the contest. However, Churchie took the last six wickets for just 19 runs, dismissing BGS for 85 and securing a bonus point win. Henry Hillier (3/11) led the attack with three wickets, while debutants Rupert Bignall (2/10) and Samuel Drinnen (2/12) both impressed with the ball.
There were a number of exceptional individual performances from across the weekend, with boys overcoming the heat to excel on the field. These included:
This weekend sees Churchie take on St Joseph’s Gregory Terrace, which is always a tough opposition on the cricket field. Good luck to all teams for their Round 2 matches.
James Patmore
Director of Cricket

This Saturday was an incredible start to the GPS Volleyball season. The heat was intense and the BGS opposition were, as always, tough opponents. Across all age groups and venues, the games were incredibly close. However, Churchie emerged as the overall winner of the day.
The Years 5 and 6 teams, had a very successful weekend, with four wins from four matches. After training hard in the preseason with enthusiasm and dedication, it was wonderful to see the boys put into play their newly learned skills, court positions and aimed serving.
The Years 7 and 8 teams were particularly impressive, winning almost every game. Only 7B and 8A were overcome by the highly skilled BGS teams. The Year 8 boys dominated the away venue, with almost all teams securing 2 nil wins. Year 8A put in a great effort, but narrowly missed out on victory.
Year 9 had a strong start, convincingly winning their games with a 2 nil score. In a close match, 9A secured a win in the first game of the day. The scores were 25 to 27 in favour of BGS, 26 to 24 in favour of ACGS, and the third set ended with 15 to 11 in favour of Churchie!
The Year 10 teams had a challenging day, losing out in very close games. The 10D team, immaculately coached by Joshua Sneesby, emerged victorious with a 3 nil win. The 10A team fought hard against a skilled and well-coached BGS team but narrowly lost in the final set. The scores were 16 to 25 in favour of BGS, a second set 25 to 21 in a fight back from Churchie, and the final set ended with a score of 13 to 15 in favour of BGS.
Unfortunately, the 11A team and the Second VI were also unlucky in their age groups, losing their matches. On a positive note, the First VI team triumphed in three sets.
Overall, it was a thrilling start to the GPS season, with impressive performances from all the teams. Thank you to all parents, volunteers and, of course, the BOC army for outstanding crowd support support on one of the hottest days of the year.
Carrie Mill
Director of Volleyball

Churchie Debating’s start to the year was nothing short of intense. With a GPS competition that started Thursday (due to the Australia Day public holiday) and 28 teams between the GPS and QDU competitions, we hit the ground running. Being a new director, this further added to the intensity, but I was wonderfully supported and welcomed by previous director Grant Smith, the cocurricular team and our terrific Debating Support Group.
Thursday night’s round one against a traditionally strong Brisbane Grammar School was a tremendously positive night of debating. With nine wins earned out of 13 possible debates, I couldn’t have been prouder of the sportsmanship, conduct and grit demonstrated by all boys in every team. Congratulations to 8.1, 8.3, 9.1, 9.2, 9.3, 10.1, 10.2, 11.1 and 12.1 on strong wins. While our Senior As were only pipped by a very tight split panel decision of 2 to 1 in favour of Brisbane Grammar School, our responsiveness and polish were showcased to a very engaged audience. I thank our spectators and families for giving our students an audience for the first home round of the season.
Thanks to all the boys who have checked their training schedule in myChurchie, and my thanks to all of you for your proactivity in confirming with me about potential clashes with other GPS training or school activity rehearsals.
To clarify any concerns families may have, GPS competition nights take precedence over training for other sports, and boys should talk to their coaches of their other sports to let them know. This was tricky this past Thursday and will be, again, in round six where we debate on Thursday 29 February due to GPS Swimming Championships on Friday 1 March.
As debating is allotted one weekly training session (with other sports allocated multiple), boys need to ensure that they are attending the training for debating every week. In circumstances where our coaches cannot attend the allotted training day, I have been having conversations to negotiate occasional time swaps, but I do remind boys that if you signed up to debate in 2024, you need to maintain this commitment and adhere to the training schedule as set. This may also result in boys in families reflecting upon their 2025 commitments.
I look forward to meeting you all in the weeks and months of competitions to come.
Rebecca Hewitt
Director of Debating

The Australia Day public holidays created an opportunity for boys to rest and prepare for our first pre-meet this Friday.
This week our programme will host both The Southport School and Brisbane State High School for our invitational meet at the Barry McCart Aquatic Centre. We are encouraging all boys to register for the meet to obtain electronic timing in the pursuit of improving their race times. The Swimming Support Group will offer a sausage sizzle and cold drinks from the barbeque area. Pre-meet registrations close on Thursday 1 February at 3 pm. Click here to register. The Captain of Swimming’s gnome weekly award will also be up for grabs.
This is the last chance for GPS Swimming families to pay for the Monday Breakfast Service offered by our Swimming Support Group. Parents, please note the last Swimming Support Group Meeting for the season will be held on Monday 12 February in Brenan Pavilion.
Swimming Lytton and Met East Trial information, forms and nomination process have been released on myChurchie – Swimming under Season Information.

On 1 December 2023, 39 Churchie students and five staff members travelled over to England for a once-in-a-lifetime, two-week footballing adventure. In an action-packed fortnight, the boys had the chance to train at world-class academies (Manchester United, Tottenham Hotspur, Fulham and more). They also played friendly games against local schools – Manchester City Grammar and Aldenham School and English Premier League Academies – Wolverhampton Wanderers and Sheffield United.
The tour included stadium tours of some of the most iconic football venues in the world (Old Trafford, Anfield and Stamford Bridge). While in London the boys took the opportunity to visit some historical landmarks, such as Big Ben and Buckingham Palace.
Perhaps the biggest highlight was watching their heroes live. They got the chance to see world-class players up close; this included the Tottenham versus West Ham London Derby and a mouthwatering Everton versus Chelsea game in the North of England.
The next European football tour will occur in 2025. Look out for information to be released in the middle of this year.

Director of Football
