Churchie News · Churchie Newsletter – 2024 Term 1 Week 9

From the Head of Preparatory School

Reflecting on my time at school, one of my most precious memories was the enjoyment of playing sport, particularly team sport. I just loved having a go at anything—football, cricket, tennis, cross country. You name it. I tried it.

For a long time, it was about fun and enjoyment: the opportunity to enjoy physical activity with my friends and make connections with boys who share a similar interest, being part of a team working towards common goals and playing for nothing more than the love of the game.

As I look back now, I can see the many benefits and important life skills that sport provides. Teamwork, resilience, dealing with frustration and disappointment, resolving conflicts and solving problems are some of the many reasons we play sport. It was sport that taught me the link between training and skill development, hard work and improvement.

As a school, we have enjoyed a successful Term 1 season of debating, volleyball and cricket, with a number of strong performances across the School. It was wonderful to witness the connections our Prep boys made with boys in the Senior School. Whether it be enjoying a burger and chips while watching the First XI, having senior volleyball players supporting Prep teams or getting tips and advice from our senior debaters, it is clearly evident that our boys have enjoyed their sport.

It was interesting to read that, according to the recent AusPlay survey data, only 31 per cent of children in Australia aged between 5 and 11 are engaged in sporting activities. Further, for children aged 12 to 14, that increases to 33 per cent. I think, however, participation rates amongst our Churchie boys would well surpass these statistics.

I recently watched a video on YouTube that highlights the pressures for children to continue to play sport. Posted to the ESPN channel, the video features a 9-year-old boy fronting a press conference to announce his retirement from sport at the tender age of 9. For many children, sport has become more of a chore rather than fun. This video is clearly highlighting the pressures placed upon children to play sport. The boy cites that the pressure it takes to play sport at his age is clearly too much. The constant advice from coaches and parents, being left on the bench when the game was on the line has taken the fun away from sport. This video was an interesting strategy to highlight to parents and coaches that sport at this age, particularly for our Prep boys, is about fun, enjoyment and participation.

As a school, we understand and aim to provide a wide variety of sporting opportunities. In an increasingly disconnected world, our cocurricular experiences build community, a sense of identity and belonging for our boys. While it is important to play for premierships, wins and trophies, it is also a reminder that sport is about more than winning. It is about the love of the game and enjoying the many benefits of sport and taking that passion and life lessons into our adult life.

The Viking 2023 reminder to collect

The Viking 2023 yearbook has been distributed to all staff and students across the School. If your son was enrolled at the school in 2023 and has not yet received The Viking 2023, please have them contact their housemaster (Senior School) or classroom teacher (Prep School).

Value of the week: compassion

Compassion is understanding and caring when someone is hurt or troubled, even if you don’t know them. It is wanting to help, even if all you can do is listen and say kind words. You forgive mistakes. You are a friend when someone needs a friend. Understanding is using your mind to think clearly and paying careful attention to see the meaning of things. An understanding mind gives you insights and wonderful ideas. An understanding heart gives you empathy and compassion for others. Understanding is the power to think and learn and also to care.

Attribute of the week: knowledgeable

When you are knowledgeable, you explore concepts, ideas and issues that have local and global significance. In so doing, you acquire in-depth knowledge and develop an understanding across a broad and balanced range of disciplines.

Interhouse Swimming Carnival

On Friday 8 March the first of our four interhouse carnivals kicked off with a friendly competition in the pool. The day began with our Years 1 and 2 boys showcasing their skills and talents in the freestyle and backstroke events, with some very close races across the morning. These boys exhibited outstanding determination and commitment to kick that little bit faster or dive that little further to get the win against their peers. It was terrific to see all the boys in Years 1 and 2 cheering on their classmates as they swam down the pool.

After morning tea, the competition went up a notch, as our Years 3 and 4 boys began racing for points for their houses. It was a very tight contest across these year levels with Angles taking a slight lead at the end of this carnival. Boys raced in three strokes and competed in a mixed Years 3 and 4 relay that was the highlight of the morning.

Finally, the Years 5 and 6 boys had the opportunity to demonstrate their speed and talents in the pool. With Saxons dominant in the Year 5 races, it brought the competition a lot closer. In their final year of Prep School, Year 6 led superbly, racing fast and hard as well as cheering on all their mates as they raced down the 50 m pool.

Angles maintained their close lead, heading into the final three relays of the day and with double points on the line, the boys had everything to swim for. Once again with some very close racing, Angles managed to win two of the three relays and come out victorious in the first of our interhouse carnivals.

Congratulations to all boys on your efforts across the day, it was fantastic to see the sportsmanship and healthy competition amongst our Prep School. Thank you to the many families that came out and cheered on the boys, it made for a terrific atmosphere.

We look forward to our next event, Interhouse Cross Country on the last day of Term 1.

Year 6 camp

From Max May (Year 6).

On Wednesday 13 March, 6B and 6D left for an adventurous three-day camping trip at Stradbroke Island (Minjerriba). It was a wonderful experience as we went all over the island, bonding as classmates and as a cohort.

Day one

We left Churchie at 6:30 am to get to Cleveland. We had a long, three-hour trip: first a bus ride, then a ferry ride across Moreton Bay, and a short ride to our campground, Adder Rock. Once we arrived, we pitched our tents and set out on a big hike along the coastline, hiking through beautiful rock formations and white sandy beaches. Once we arrived at our destination we set up and went for a dip in Cylinder Beach’s lagoon. At nighttime, we had a moving talk by one of the Quondamooka rangers. He spoke to us about the history, culture and meaning of Stradbroke and Minjierriba.

Day two

We went to many places, including Myora Springs and Brown Lake. We trekked to the mouth of the spring and walked out to where the freshwater met the ocean. Before this, we had hiked to Brown Lake and built makeshift rafts. We paddled around the lake and raced to find objects scattered around it. When we arrived back at camp, we had a fun nighttime activity we had to sneak past the teachers and catch a fake light-up koala.

Day three

We had to pack up our stuff and had enough time for a few fun activities before we headed home weary but happy!

Year 3 Reader of the Week

Congratulations to Alex Bridge on being Reader of the Week.

Year 2 buddies

Students in 2A and 6E met for buddies this week. The boys created a ‘Six Thinking Hats’ activity where the Year 6 buddies asked their Year 2 buddy questions related to different ideas to find out more about each other. They quickly learned about their buddies’ strengths and hobbies.

We look forward to more interactions with our buddies.

Easter service

The Prep School’s Easter Service at St John’s Cathedral will be on Monday 25 March from 6 to 7 pm. The service is compulsory for all Years 4 to 6 boys. A roll will be taken in the evening. The formal uniform of a white shirt and tie is to be worn by all students attending. Boys with special tasks at this service will travel to the cathedral during the day of the service to rehearse. All families are welcome to attend.

Prep Support Group

The next meeting of the Prep Support Group will be in JB Adams Library at 6 pm on Thursday 21 March. All Prep School parents are welcome to attend.

Billy Cart Grand Prix

The annual Billy Cart Grand Prix is a time-honoured event held on Oaklands Parade. This year the grand prix will be on Thursday 13 June. All boys in Years 4 to 6 are encouraged to enter a team comprising one driver and two pushers. We encourage the creation of homemade billy carts; it is a fun exercise for boys and their families.

Early childhood playground

I ask parents and carers to note that boys are not to play running games in the early childhood playground before school. This rule applies across the whole Prep School, from Reception to Year 6.

Before school, boys may play handball and other games that don’t involve running. This ensures that boys are not physically overwrought at the start of the school day. Please remind your boys of this rule.

Safety around the School

Please travel carefully and at a speed that will allow you to stop safely at a crossing if needed. Drive slowly in school zones:  Stay alert: be mindful of pedestrians, bike riders and other motorists and look out for crossings.

Care must be taken at all times when in the vicinity of the School. Particular care must be taken in the morning before school and in the afternoon after school. During peak periods (7:55 to 8:25 am and 3 to 3:30 pm), only the designated crossing points are to be used to cross the road.

When parking in the streets surrounding the school precinct, please observe all parking signs, and do not block the driveways of local residents. It is unsafe and illegal for cars to even slightly impinge on no parking, bus or no standing zones, or driveways.

I encourage you to set the right example to keep our children and the rest of the community safe.

Term dates

The final school day for this term is Wednesday 27 March. Term 2 commences on Tuesday 16 April.

QCE evaluation

The QCAA has engaged the University of Melbourne’s Assessment and Evaluation Research Centre to conduct an independent evaluation of the new QCE system. The aim is to assess the QCE’s efficacy and for recommendations to the QCAA for future improvements.

Following a recent opportunity for school communities to provide initial feedback via a quick survey, the University of Melbourne is now inviting organisations and individuals to make more substantial written submissions of up to 2,000 words on their thoughts, experiences and impressions of the QCE system and its processes. Responses are required address to five stimulus questions that can be found on the submission form via this link. The closing date for these written submissions is Friday 19 April.

Please click here for information on Churchie’s thoughts regarding the new QCE. However, we encourage members of our community to offer their own views.

Mental Health and Wellbeing Portfolio

By Prefect (Wellbeing Portfolio) Bill McCart.

At a large and busy school like Churchie, youth mental health and wellbeing are growing priorities for the boys, staff and our community. As we enter the year, the 2024 seniors aim to maintain the momentum of previous cohorts by enhancing and broadening our approach to mental wellbeing at Churchie.

Our goals for this year include promoting all the wellbeing services offered by Churchie and beyond, destigmatising wellbeing issues and encouraging help-seeking behaviour. Throughout the year, the seniors, prefects and wellbeing ambassadors hope to implement some of these initiatives:

  • expand the role of each house’s Student Wellbeing Ambassadors, making them a more visible and accessible part of each house community
  • publicly promote mental health services (like the myChurchie Wellbeing page and SchoolTV) at house meetings and school assemblies.
  • Create surveys to gauge the boys’ opinions on mental health in the school and improve their mental health literacy.

From sleep to stress, from exercise to self-esteem, there are so many ways we can improve our understanding and support of mental wellbeing. Through these initiatives, we aim to further develop a culture of open-mindedness and establish pathways for this culture to grow in the years to come.

Term 1 formal boarding dinner

By Vice-Captain and Head Boarder George Ward (Year 12).

On Thursday evening, all boarders assembled outside School House in their Whites for Term 1’s formal dinner, providing an opportunity to celebrate the term and the boys’ achievements. Guest speaker President of the Old Boys’ Association Mr Grant Menzies, enlightened the boys on the opportunities and value of the Old Boys network while reminding us of the unique connections we have in boarding. The night concluded with reflections from House Captains Marcus Pearce and Angus Stinson on their respective houses’ achievements. A special thank you must go to Mr Stansbie and the Chartwells kitchen staff for organising the event.

University Showcase

The Churchie Career Development Centre recently invited 13 universities from across the region to the inaugural University Showcase in The Centenary Library. Year 12 students attended a short presentation from the universities on how to apply to university and prioritise their preferences, as well as opportunities available with scholarships and overseas exchanges.

Students were then invited to move outside to the exhibition area to speak with the university representatives individually at their displays, gaining invaluable insight into university pathways.

We would like to thank the universities for their time and guidance and the Career Centre for providing this opportunity to our Year 12s.

Music

Churchie Music is a vibrant, dynamic and busy department, with multiple opportunities throughout the year for boys to immerse themselves in music making of the highest level. Our success is achieved through the considerable effort and dedication from all parties involved—staff, parents and, most importantly, the boys.

Over the years, I have yet to hear a young man say, ’I wish I had quit playing/singing much earlier in my school life.’ It should be no surprise that the conversations I have are quite the opposite to this. The memories that flow from their time here as musicians—of concerts, rehearsals and tours; of challenging times and amazing moments—these enrich their time at Churchie.

I am grateful that so many continue their love of music into their later years.

If you have any questions about the program please do not hesitate to contact our enthusiastic staff who will be only too pleased to assist.

Sport

Churchie hosted a successful first GPS Cross Country meet last Friday, while our Term 1 sports and activities drew to a close with a bye round this weekend. Looking ahead, Term 2 sports and activities are gearing up for a strong start to begin round one, with the team selection process mostly completed and training in progress.

After another exciting GPS round eight last weekend, we invite everyone to see the weekend’s results summary via myChurchie – GPS Sports and Activities.

Cross Country

The first GPS practice meet was held at Churchie last Friday and the Churchie Cross Country team started the season extremely well.

There were some outstanding individual runs:

  • Daniel Lane – 3rd (13 Years)
  • Andrew McConnel – 3rd (14 Years)
  • Zac Moore – 1st (15 Years)
  • Lachlan Moore – 1st (16 Years)

The team also performed very well with Churchie winning the meet.

  • 1st: Churchie (43 points)
  • 2nd: Gregory Terrace (34 points)
  • 3rd: Brisbane State High School ( 32 points)

The team now looks forward to the second practice meet of the season at TSS this Friday.

Director of Cross Country

Debating

GPS Debating concluded for us Friday, with an away round at The Southport School. TSS always puts up a good fight, and faced with some devilishly hard topics, it was a big afternoon of competition. Outcomes in the first round were strong. All but one team won their debates in the 4:15 pm and 5:15 pm timeslots, while results were more balanced in the 6:15 pm bracket. Nevertheless, 12 of 18 teams prevailed, several achieving joint or outright premierships. While we cannot be certain of our overall placements until the completion of the round nine all the other schools, we have some clear and decisive top-of-the-table results for 8.1, 9.1, 9.2, 11.1 and 12.1 teams. Likewise, congratulations to the Senior A boys for consolidating their clear third place overall. To Dario, Caelan, Finbar and Felix, we are so proud of your leadership and contributions to the sport and for our outstanding unanimous panel win on Friday night.

Rounding off our competition will be our trivia and show debate on Friday as the final GPS training session of the year. The topics have been picked, the chocolate bunnies have been purchased, and the hype is building for the showdown between star senior speakers and their revered alumni opposition. So be at Viking Café in your blues at 3:10 pm this Friday to show your skill and knowledge and potentially walk away with enough chocolate to fill your Easter hampers.

Rebecca Hewitt
Director of Debating

Cricket

Saturday’s round of the GPS Cricket saw Churchie take on powerhouse TSS in the our final round of matches for the season.

With TSS having won nine of the last 14 First XI premierships, with strength across all age levels, meeting them in our final round was a test of how far Churchie Cricket has grown and developed across 2024. Ultimately the boys in blue and grey more than held their own. They won 12 of the 22 official matches played against TSS, including winning all four Prep School matches .

Impressively, the Year 12s also enjoyed outstanding success, with the Second, Third and Fourth XIs victorious in their final ever matches for the School, an outstanding finish to their Churchie Cricket careers.

Importantly, wins by the Third XI and 10A saw them join 9A in securing first place on their ladder for the 2024 season. With points being secured for the final round bye, numerous teams, including 5C, 7B and 8A could all join them as first-place finishers for the season. Well done to all of those teams for the outstanding success they have enjoyed throughout 2024.

The First XI match against promised to be a high-quality contest between first and third placed teams on the ladder. It did not disappoint. With Churchie needing to win to keep alive premiership hopes, the boys batted first, and, in a rare occurrence over the last ten years, TSS faced serious pressure on their home turf, with a blistering 61 from Rupert Bignall, who was promoted up the order, helping Churchie post a very strong 8/221. Rupert was well supported in the innings by Angus Storen (50) and Jayden Draper (34).

TSS, however, demonstrated their  powerhouse status, scoring 30 runs in the first three overs to put them ahead of the run chase. Churchie stayed toe-to-toe from there, taking regular wickets to keep themselves in the contest. However, ultimately TSS proved too good, chasing the total six wickets down with three overs to spare.

The result means that Churchie will finish the season in third place, the first time the School has recorded a top-three placing in First XI cricket since 2014. A TSS win next week will see them claim a tenth premiership in 15 seasons.

A number of boys, especially Year 12 boys, enjoyed an outstanding performance in their final games of the season, particularly Ben Donger, who hit an incredible 100 off 40 balls, to get the Fourth XI across the line. Congratulations to the players listed below.

  • Rupert Bignall First XI 61
  • Angus Storen First XI 50
  • Sam Wilkins Second XI 4/12
  • Conor Wrigley Third XI 88*
  • Hamon McKenzie Third XI 4/16
  • Ben Donger Fourth XI 100
  • Will Souter 10A 72
  • Lachlan Moore 10A 54
  • Max Johnstone 7A 95
  • Teddy Chandler 8B 67
  • Alex Ramage 7A 4/31

The season will officially conclude this Saturday evening with the End of Season Dinner at the Brisbane Convention and Exhibition Centre. We look forward to seeing the community come together to celebrate the successes of the 2024 season.

Director of Cricket

Water Polo

There has been a large number of boys registered in Years 7 and 8 to play in Term 2 which has resulted in the need for a trial this term. The trial will be held in Week 9 on Thursday 21 March from 7 to 8 am at the Churchie 25 m pool.

The first part of the trial will require all boys to complete a 200 m time trial followed by a 4×25 m sprint session (you may wear goggles for the swim sets).

Alan Greenbank
Director of Water Polo

Sporting Achievements

Congratulations to the following students who have achieved representative success in their sporting pursuits:

Rugby

Congratulations to Jye Crothers and Treyvon Pritchard who were both selected for the Queensland U18 Rugby Union team. The team played two academy matches against NSW U18. Queensland, unfortunately, went down in both games; however, both Jye and Treyvon performed exceptionally well, and we look forward to further representative success coming their way.
