Welcome to Term 3. I hope the previous three weeks have provided an opportunity for some family time.
I particularly offer a warm welcome to the 17 new families who commenced at the School this term. I have no doubt that each family will be warmly received by the Churchie community. I particularly welcome the five new families into our boarding community. Our new boarding families hail from Western Australia, Central Queensland, the Sunshine Coast and northern New South Wales. It was a pleasure to welcome these families at our Welcome Back BBQ on Monday, prior to the commencement of classes on Tuesday.
For those willing, as always, the mid-year break offered a suite of school-based activities for students in various learning and service experiences. Members of Stage Crew volunteered their time and skills to support the annual Synod of the Anglican Church of the Anglican Diocese of Brisbane. Many boys were involved in basketball, rugby and chess preseason training, trials and camps, and a group of students travelled to the UK for a residential study experience at Cambridge University.
Perhaps the most unique experience was the inaugural service tour to Timor-Leste. Very early in the morning of 14 June, an eager group of 10 Year 12 students embarked on Churchie’s first service trip to Timor-Leste, a very young nation located north-west of Darwin. In their own words, the boys and staff were deeply moved by the manner in which they were embraced by this gracious and welcoming community. There is no doubt that they learned a great deal as they lived, played and assisted in a local school. I thank the parents for supporting this experience and, especially, Director of Service Clayton Kelly, Casey Housemaster Ben Hugheston-Roberts and School Marshal Craig Howe who planned and accompanied the tour. Such service and cultural experiences can be highly formative and life-changing for our students.
Refocusing on goals
The commencement of Semester 2 provides a great opportunity to reset and focus on annual goals for 2024. I encourage all boys to study their Semester 1 reports and refocus on their goals for the year. Being proactive and taking ownership of one’s learning and personal growth is central to academic and cocurricular success, so I encourage the students to commence this process promptly.

Withdrawal of enrolment for 2025
Withdrawal of your son from Churchie requires one full term’s notice in writing to Churchie Admissions via email (admissions@churchie.com.au) as outlined in the terms and conditions of your son’s enrolment agreement. Notice of your intention to withdraw your son at the end of Term 4, 2024 (i.e. he will not be returning to Churchie in 2025) must be received by the first day of Term 4, 2024 (Monday 30 September) or one term’s fees will be charged.
The Viking 2023 yearbook was distributed to all staff and students in Term 1. If your son was enrolled at Churchie in 2023 and has not yet received his copy, please collect from any of the following locations:

A very warm welcome to Term 3. It promises to be an exciting and busy term, and I am particularly looking forward to seeing the boys enjoy all the opportunities that come before them. I am sure they are enjoying being back on campus with their teachers and friends and are eager to tackle the challenges of the coming term. I trust our Churchie Prep families had an enjoyable and relaxing holiday spent with family and friends. It was certainly beautiful weather we were lucky to enjoy during our three-week holiday. We welcome new boys to the Prep School this term, and I am positive they will enjoy the Churchie experience.
I congratulate the boys who participated in the New Zealand Sports Tour and for the exemplary way they represented Churchie. Interacting with people from different cultures, broadening their experiences and immersing themselves in a different country are memories that I am sure they will take with them from their time in New Zealand. I wish to extend my gratitude to our parents who accompanied the boys on the tour. Your support and encouragement were appreciated and didn’t go unnoticed by the boys. I am grateful for the time and energy they gave in supporting our boys on the tour. Finally, a sincere thank you to our host schools St Andrew’s College, Waihi School and Medbury School for providing the opportunity to engage in some friendly competition with our friends from across the ditch. I know we will have boys looking forward to the 2025 tour.
New Zealand sports tour
In the first week of the school holidays, our Year 6 boys embarked on an exciting sporting tour to New Zealand’s South Island, Christchurch for five nights. They played against three schools: St Andrew’s College, Waihi School and Medbury School. Over the course of the tour, the boys displayed outstanding skill, determination and resilience securing victories in eight out of the nine games played across basketball, football and rugby.
Beyond the impressive match results, the tour was a fantastic opportunity for our boys to demonstrate exceptional sportsmanship. They embraced the chance to make new friends, creating lasting connections with their peers from New Zealand. The tour also provided enriching life experiences, as the boys navigated new environments and immersed themselves in the local culture.
Overall, the Year 6 sporting tour was a resounding success, leaving our boys with cherished memories and valuable lessons both on and off the field. I would like to take the opportunity to thank teachers James Harth, Gavin Darwin, Adam Fry, Shay Thomas, Jade Frewin and Richard Boles for giving up their holidays to make the tour a success for all involved.

Billy Cart Grand Prix
Congratulations to all boys and families on the level of participation in this year’s Billy Cart Grand Prix. It was a superb event conducted in a carnival atmosphere, with our community service goals kept uppermost in our minds throughout the day. I extend special thanks to the many parents, grandparents and friends for supporting the boys in the lead-up to this great event. The carts looked spectacular, and it was a fantastic event and a lovely way to finish the term. It was also great to see the street lined with parents, family and friends, adding to the spectacle of the end-of-term festivities. I also extend my sincere thanks to Deputy Head of Prep School Gavin Darwin for the tireless work that he put into making this great event happen.

Australian Maths Competition
All boys in Years 3 to 6 will sit the Australian Maths Competition on Tuesday 6 August. First run in 1978, the Australian Mathematics Competition is Australia’s longest-running, largest and most well-known maths competition for school students. The AMC contains unique problems designed each year by leading educators and academics to challenge and extend your sons’ problem-solving skills.
The competition will be run in class during the timetabled maths lesson time.

Senior School photos
Senior School photos, which include Years 7 to 12 house photos, portraits, Year 12 Valedictory photos and sibling photos, are scheduled for Thursday 25 July (week three) for all houses except Grenfell and Kingsley. Year 7 form photos are also scheduled for this day.
Thursday 1 August (week four) is the scheduled photo day for Grenfell and Kingsley, including their sibling photos.
Students are to wear Whites, and there is a high expectation of all students to have the correct haircut, as per the School Handbook and Student Diary. Please note the following extract for personal grooming:
Hair must be such that it can be kept well-groomed and tidy. The expectation is that the hairstyle be conservative and that hair should be above the collar at the back. Ears must be completely visible and must not have hair hanging over them or brushed behind them. The length of sideburns is to be no lower than the middle of the ears.
The following are considered unacceptable:
undercuts or layering
excess length, including long fringes that extend beyond the eyebrows when the hair is pulled downwards towards the nose
dreadlocks
excessive hair product
extremes of fashion
hair colouring beyond the natural colour
shaved heads at blade cut less than 3
tracks through the hair or eyebrows.
Furthermore, students must be clean-shaven at all times and the wearing of visible jewellery, studs or piercings is unacceptable; religious jewellery must be kept under the clothing.
Students not suitably presented will be excluded from the photos.

The Year 7 Parents and Son Breakfast will be held on Tuesday 23 July from 7:30 to 8:10 am in Morris Hall. Please join us for a light breakfast and the opportunity to meet with housemasters and other families from your year level. There is no charge for this event. 2025 Cocurricular Selection Information Evening
We are excited to announce Churchie’s 2025 cocurricular selections will commence via a video presentation on Monday 29 July commencing at 6 pm. Information regarding GPS sports and activities, music and the creative arts will be presented, including the process for selections. All parents and students are encouraged to view the presentation.
Following the video, families will have time to review all options and submit 2025 preferences via myChurchie – GPS Sport and Activities Selections (the site will become live on Monday at 7:30 pm).
Instructions and a link to the myChurchie – GPS Sport and Activities Selections will be distributed to families and time allowed for boys and their parents to discuss their academic and cocurricular commitments.

Saturday 27 July (week three): Cocurricular Showcase event for new 2025 Year 5 to 12 students and current Year 4 and 6 students only (11 am-12:30 pm)

Basketball
The GPS season starts this week against Brisbane Grammar School. The match-up across the programme will be a good measure of the strength of our preseason through our Vikings club basketball games, training and recent holiday camps.
Last Saturday saw the annual Tip-Off Night, where 600 members of the Churchie Basketball community watched the Year 4 Vikings boys play a pre-game to the Old Boy versus First V Match Up for the Jocelyn Pitt Trophy.
The game did not disappoint, with the Old Boys taking an early lead before a strong third-quarter run, and an even stronger finish, saw the final score 96 to 90 in favour of the First V. Highlights were 23 points by Nash Harding and 19 from Oskar Olechnowicz, as well as some late 3-point daggers by Year 10 point guard Noah Kirk. The First V are looking to be strong contenders for the 2024 GPS Premiership.
This weekend against Brisbane Grammar, we strongly encourage all boys who are available to adopt the mantra, ‘You play, you stay’. We would love to see all boys who can stay for the 12:15 pm game in the Sir John Pidgeon Sports Complex for the First V, and hopefully replicate the support seen in football leading into their undefeated premiership. The games do not clash with them moving to watch the rugby, and the band will be in full swing to make the atmosphere that much more exciting.

Congratulations to the following students for their success in the following sporting pursuits.
Basketball
The following boys were recently selected into the Queensland Teams for Representative School Sport or at the Basketball Queensland/Basketball Australia level:
Andrew Watene (Year 9): Under 16 Queensland Team playing at the National Championships in Bendigo this week.
Jake Miles-Wrency (Year 12) and Connor Davidson (Year 12) were selected for the QRSS Queensland Open Merit Team.
Noah Kirk (Year 10) was selected for the National Indigenous Basketball Australia Camp.
Volleyball
Cooper Sharpe (Year 12) represented the Australian Under 20 Volleyball Team in early June. They played a three-match series against New Zealand in Canberra with the winner qualifying for the Asian Championships. The Australian side won the series 2–1. Cooper will now represent Australia at the 2024 Asian Men’s U20 Volleyball Championship in Indonesia from 23 to 30 July.
Additionally, Luka Sazdov (Year 12), Wil Fearnley (Year 11) and Frankie Sharpe (Year 10) were selected for the Youth Men’s National Indoor Squad, a pathways project focused on selecting the top 50 volleyballers around the country and providing them with additional training with the goal of future national selection.
Luka Sazdov and Wil Fearnley won the Open Honours division of the Australian Beach Volleyball Schools Cup. This ranks them as the best schoolboy beach volleyball pairing in the country for any age group. With over 184 teams across high school age groups, it was a great accomplishment to win the open division and showcase the excellent volleyball talent and development here at Churchie.
Additionally, Luka also won the Under 18 Boys competition at the Australian Youth Beach Volleyball Championships. This comes after he was named the Queensland Junior Beach Male Player of the Year for the third year in a row.
Luka Sazdov was named in the 16–19 Years QRSS Queensland Merit team after representing Met East at the Volleyball State Championships.
Oliver Dale (Year 8) was selected in the Queensland Squad for the Volleyball Australia Emerging Talent Program.

Water polo
Jack Barrett (Year 7), Xavier Ringholdt (Year 7) and Henry Juniper (Year 8) represented Queensland in the Under 13 Development Team for Water Polo in Hobart over the holidays. Their team dominated the tournament, winning undefeated, with a for and against record of 170 to 33 goals over 9 games, the most important victory being a 12–7 win over arch-rivals NSW.

Rugby
Will Whalan (Year 7) was selected as half-back and captain of the team to play in the Brisbane Junior Rugby Union Presidents’ XV team in the Under 13 SCSC Challenge Cup on the weekend. They finished as runners-up with the silver medal.
Football
Quinn MacNicol (Year 11) represented Australia in the ASEAN U16 Boys’ Championship in Indonesia. Quinn was equal top scorer of the Championship. The Subway Joeys won the Championship trophy. (See article Australia’s Joeys win ASEAN U16 Boy’s Championship on aleagues.com.au)

Touch football
Zac Griggs (Year 12) was selected to represent Queensland in the U18 Schoolboys Team and will travel to Coffs Harbour in September for the Championships.
Track and field
Late last term, Adam Beiers (Year 12) was selected to represent Australia at the Oceania Under 18 Championships winning the silver medal in the individual 400 m in a photo finish, 0.01 seconds separating the gold and silver medallists. Adam also competed in the 4×400 m relay with Australia winning the gold medal in a Championship record.
Adam has also been selected for the Australian team to compete in the World Junior (U20) Track and Field Championships in Peru in August.
We congratulate Adam on his achievements so far and wish him the very best of luck at the World Juniors.

Cross country
Last term 22 Churchie athletes competed at the Metropolitan East Regional Cross Country Championships.
All boys ran very well with the following young men being selected to represent the Metropolitan East region at the State Cross Country Championships this weekend: Hamish Barwick, Lachlan Moore, Zac Moore, Freddie McDonnell, Andrew McConnel, Daniel Lane, Winston Rogers and George Chandler.

Recently retired Wallaby skipper, Michael Hooper, will join Wallaby Coach, Joe Schmidt on the panel at the upcoming Churchie Rugby Luncheon.
The annual Churchie Rugby Luncheon will be held on Friday 9 August 2024 at the Brisbane Convention and Exhibition Centre in Brisbane’s South Bank. This event precedes the Wallabies’ match against the current World Champions, the South African Springboks at Suncorp Stadium. As always, there will be top-level entertainment, with Justin Harrison as the main speaker, along with a panel discussion conducted by MC Greg Clark featuring new Wallabies coach Joe Schmidt and other former Wallabies. Additionally, there will be the usual raffles, auctions and the ball-passing competition for both men and women.
With the much talked about British and Irish Lions Tour in 2025, tables purchased for the 2024 luncheon will receive priority for 2025, which will undoubtedly be a sell-out at the new venue, The Star Casino, Brisbane. Save the date for the Churchie British and Irish Lions Test on Friday 18 July 2025.

Roma Rugby Races
The community of families who came to Roma this year was larger than we had imagined. It was a delight to meet and support Gerald Housemaster John Flynn and his wife Siobhan and two children, as they did a great job representing Churchie Boarding alongside Director of Engagement (Old Boys and Foundation) David Miles, President of the OBA Grant Menzies and OBA Vice-President Darren Marchant. Special thanks to the parent volunteers Jacinta Apel, Sophie Anning Cooper, Penelope and Tony Hindman for their hospitality and for organising the weekend socials.
Zei Balas rugby team supporters
Parent Connect is honoured to have been invited to support this Indigenous student-led initiative. The Zei Balas (meaning bonded brothers) rugby team was established in 2021 with the help of Churchie staff members Kelly Jackson and Craig Howe. They formed a rugby team to compete in the ABF Queensland Murri Carnival, enabling the opportunity to showcase their talents and proudly represent their diverse backgrounds and rich culture through sports with their mates from remote communities.
Captain Jayden Ah Boo and Vice-Captain Bailen Noy are leading the 2024 team, which includes players from Thursday Island, Badu Island, Horn Island, Mabuiag Island, Mungindi, Brisbane and Sunshine Coast.
Our support involves raising community awareness, fundraising, and engaging supporters. Thanks to the growing community of supporters, the team has developed their logo and uniforms and continues to raise funds to meet their financial needs. You can support the team by attending their games at Churchie Rugby home games, following their story, and contributing via GoFundMe.
