From the Headmaster

As the last days of winter recede and we move towards another beautiful Queensland summer, our boys have an opportunity to reflect upon their efforts across the three terms of the year.

I wonder, as they consider their achievements and progress, are they well pleased, somewhat pleased, or disappointed? It may well be a mixture of all three as they cast their eye over the landscape of their school year. The great thing about life, particularly when you are young, is that new opportunities and beginnings come along all the time. A new approach, a new attitude, or a new solution can be found by an inquisitive mind on any given day.

The forthcoming vacation provides an ideal opportunity to reflect on progress, review one’s goals, and redouble the intention to improve upon current results. Whether our boys are travelling during this vacation, preparing for ATAR or IB examinations, or spending time with family at home, it is important to think about the personal growth and milestones established throughout this year. I would love to see every boy draw a sense of satisfaction and fulfilment in knowing that there has been tangible growth and improvement this year—that every opportunity has been seized, and hitherto insurmountable challenges have been embraced, resulting in an imbued sense of self-confidence and willingness to strive further.

Each term, like each year, brings with it the promise of a new beginning, made so much the richer after a period of honest reflection. In his book Sons of Magnus, School Founder Canon Morris wrote, ‘If you are foolish and make a mess of things, or even just get slack, you can always start afresh, and do better next time!’ (Chapter XIV).

Year 12 Study Camp 2024

I commend to our Year 12 students the study camp opportunity available to them, hosted in The Centenary Library, in the second week of the semester break. This is a great opportunity to consolidate learning prior to the Term 4 external examinations for IB and ATAR subjects. Such an opportunity is made possible by the generosity of our teaching staff who make themselves available to offer tutoring sessions. I do thank our teaching staff very much for their willingness to support the Year 12 students in this way.

Congratulations: four GPS premierships

Winning a GPS premiership is always a challenging enterprise. Given the very competitive nature of GPS sports and activities, it is not often the School secures four premierships in a single year, with the Track and Field Championships still to come. I therefore warmly congratulate the staff, students, coaches and volunteers in our basketball, chess, football and volleyball programmes who have achieved a Firsts premiership this year. Such achievements are only possible with a whole-community effort; I thank and congratulate everyone involved in these cocurricular success stories. I also acknowledge the many parents who volunteer their time to support our students, staff and coaches—supporting and building the communities upon which our success is built.

Best wishes for a safe and refreshing mid-semester vacation

Churchie Parents Advisory Association

Upcoming general meeting

The next general meeting of the CPAA is on Sunday 29 September 2024 at 4 pm in Nichols Theatre located in the Stanley and May Smith Science Centre. Each year, one of our meetings is held on the day boarders return from holidays to enable our further-flung parents to attend in person. It is a great opportunity for day and boarding parents to share the afternoon and we look forward to seeing many parents there. The agenda will be released shortly.

CPAA Executive membership in 2025

While all Churchie parents are automatically general members of the CPAA, there is also a CPAA Executive body, which meets one to two times per term to provide parent input and advice directly to the School Executive and School Council on matters of strategic and practical importance. In 2024, the CPAA Executive worked with the School in relation to fundraising policy, the master building plan, cocurricular support, volunteer engagement and boarding provision, among other topics.

The Executive is appointed by the School Council and consists of two representatives from the Prep School, Years 7 to 9, Years 10 to 12, boarding and cocurricular support groups, and one representative from Parent Connect. Members are appointed for 12 months at a time, with a maximum term of four years. The Constitution is available on myChurchie on the CPAA page.

Are you interested in joining the CPAA Executive in 2025? Nominations are now open, and we encourage all interested parents to apply by completing the document at this link and returning it to cpaa@churchie.com.au by Friday 25 October 2024. Our current Chair, Angela Rae, would be happy to talk further if you would like more information—she can be contacted at agrae@burnettlane.com.au.

Prep School

It has been another busy, challenging and rewarding term at Churchie Prep. The boys have certainly earned a well-deserved holiday. Even this edition of our newsletter highlights the many wonderful activities our boys are involved in during any given week.

As I reflect on the events of Term 3, I am filled with a sense of pride in the way the boys have thrown themselves into all that is on offer in the Prep School. We often speak about the holistic nature of our school and providing a well-rounded education for our boys, and our boys have certainly been a living embodiment of that sentiment. Boys have been involved in a variety of academic incursions and excursions: Interhouse Track and Field, Prep Solos, Book Week, a variety of academic competitions including ICAS and AMC maths, Reception boys hosting St Margaret’s mini showcases, our ongoing commitment to the GPS sporting fixtures, Father’s Day celebrations and a sausage sizzle, our first ever house chapel services along with house basketball competitions, and we will finish the term with a Prep School Eucharist Service and our annual Tug of War competition. Not to mention 59 boys and 7 staff will be undertaking the annual Year 6 Canberra Tour during the first week of the holidays. It certainly has been a very busy and productive Term 3.

Our staff have been instrumental in ensuring quality learning has been happening in our classrooms this term and in providing these wonderful opportunities that exist as part of the Churchie Prep School. I know they too are looking forward to a well-earned holiday.

I hope the newsletter continues to showcase the wonderful work of our talented boys and dedicated staff as we continually strive to give our boys the best possible educational experience. I am sure you will agree that what we see in the weekly newsletter is just the tip of the iceberg. I trust you and your family will enjoy a restful and relaxing holiday period; take the opportunity to recharge the batteries and prepare yourself in readiness for a busy and exciting Term 4.

Value of the week: helpfulness

Helpfulness is being of service to others and doing thoughtful things that make a difference in their lives. Offer your help without waiting to be asked. Ask for help when you need it. When we help each other, we get more done. Being helpful makes all our lives easier.

Attribute of the week: reflective

When we are reflective, we think back on our learning. We know what we are good at and set goals to do better.

House Chapels

Last week, for the first time in the history of the Prep School, we held our inaugural Prep School House Chapels. Under the guidance of Chaplain Stephanie, our four chapel leaders planned, organised and led each service. Each leader selected a unique theme for their House Chapel, focusing on topics such as the centenary of the chapel, St Magnus, service and teamwork. The leaders also chose the hymns, readings and prayers for their respective Houses.

A highlight of each service was a Year 6 student sharing his thoughts and reflections on the new house system. It was heartwarming to hear the boys speak about the connections they’ve built with peers across the school and the sense of pride they have in their house. It was also a joy to welcome parents to these special services, further strengthening the bonds within our community and supporting the spiritual development of our boys.

Reception and Year 1 mini showcases

This week, our Reception and Year 1 students held their mini showcases, demonstrating their learning in their current Units of Inquiry. The Reception boys focused on the learner profiles and shared reflections on how their family members exemplify different profiles. The boys shared some interesting and amusing stories about their families, which made for a delightful experience.

The Year 1 Showcase centred on the theme ‘Sharing the Planet’. The Year 1 boys presented their research on Australian animals to their families, discussing their chosen animal’s environment, food sources, predators and unique characteristics. It was wonderful to see our Year 1 parents supporting the boys as they proudly showcased their learning.

House basketball

As part of our new house system, the boys have been engaging in friendly interhouse sports competitions. These events contribute valuable house points towards the Hobbs Cup. This week, our Year 5 and 6 boys participated in the lunchtime FIBA 3v3 house basketball competition. The fast-paced, 10-minute games were played within the 3-point arc, allowing for quick scoring and player substitutions after each point. This format ensured maximum participation and plenty of scoring opportunities.

In a round-robin format, the houses competed in a series of fun and competitive matches. Congratulations to Angles House, who went undefeated in both the Year 5 and Year 6 events! It was fantastic to see the boys demonstrating friendly competition and healthy sportsmanship. Events like this provide a great opportunity for the boys to learn from one another in a fun and supportive environment. A special thank you to the housemasters for their support and to Tim Sutherland and Jade Frewin for organising such a successful event.

Yalari Gala Dinner

Since 2005, Yalari has been offering full boarding school scholarships to Indigenous children from regional and remote communities across Australia, allowing them to complete their entire secondary education. Yalari believes education is the key to driving generational change and empowering future leaders.

We are proud to have 11 students currently benefiting from a Yalari scholarship. The Yalari Gala Dinner was a resounding success in Brisbane at the BCEC. It was a night of celebration, marking the remarkable achievements of Yalari scholarship holders from across Queensland. The evening was filled with inspiring stories from alumni and a special celebration of our Year 12 graduates.

The event also allowed attendees to contribute to this worthy cause, helping to support future students on their educational journeys.

Year 11 IB Extended Essay – Café

A central part of the IB Diploma Programme is the extended essay (EE)—one of three elements known as the core and the heart of the IB philosophy. The EE offers students the opportunity to research and investigate a topic of their own choice that interests them, using the independent research and writing skills they will need at university. Over a nine-month period, students design and research a question, working both independently and with a supervisor to craft a 4,000-word essay.

Last Thursday afternoon, our Year 11 IB students, who have just started their EE process, were involved in the Extended Essay Café. They spoke to their parents, teachers and peers about their potential topics and the research undertaken so far. The cohort has chosen subject areas ranging from business management, economics, philosophy, history, literature, mathematics, computer science, biology, environmental systems and societies (ESS), film, visual arts, music and theatre.

Thank you to Brian Bodell, who coordinates the extended essay process, as well as to the staff who facilitated the group discussions during the café—Matthew Preston, Alene Morley and Tracey Allen. Best wishes to our Year 11 students as they begin this exciting journey.

Year 12 IB student’s experience at MIT

Year 12 IB student Will Shackel recently returned from a week at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), where he attended the short course ‘Nuclear Energy in a Low-Carbon Future: Key Facts and Issues.’ Over the week, Will attended a series of lectures presented by a range of speakers, including:

  • Atte Harjanne (Parliament of Finland), who spoke about nuclear energy in Finland, including energy security, waste management, public acceptance and political atmosphere
  • Kasparas Spokas (Clean Air Task Force), who discussed the value of hydrogen in the global energy matrix and the role of nuclear energy in the production of clean hydrogen
  • Elina Teplinsky (Pillsbury Law), who focused on the current global state of nuclear energy
  • Zach Hartwig (MIT), who spoke about fusion energy.

Over the three days, the course covered topics ranging from nuclear and climate change, nuclear power plant basics and costs and the history of nuclear energy, to advanced reactors and fuels and the current state of nuclear energy worldwide. Will also participated in a tour of the MIT reactor.

This was a wonderful opportunity for Will to advance his knowledge of nuclear energy and meet with industry leaders from around the world.

SchoolTV special report: R U OK? Day

The highlighted topic in SchoolTV this month is a special report on R U OK? Day which can be accessed via this link or on the Wellbeing page of myChurchie.

Understanding the growing challenges related to mental health among young people is critical. Anxiety, depression and self-harm are significant causes for concern. Factors such as academic pressure, social media, family dynamics and societal expectations contribute to these issues. It is crucial for parents and caregivers to take action early, remove the stigma surrounding mental health discussions and offer accessible support.

R U OK? Day focuses on suicide prevention by encouraging meaningful personal connections and helping informal support networks recognise the signs of distress. We urge all families to take part, emphasising the value of genuine human relationships and reminding everyone to ask the important question: ‘Are you OK?’

Engaging in R U OK? Day activities go beyond the classroom—it is a commitment to our students’ overall development. Schools that openly discuss mental health create safe spaces where students feel understood, valued and supported. Parents and caregivers can contribute by fostering open conversations, normalising feelings and breaking down mental health stigmas. Participating in R U OK? Day promotes compassion and shows our dedication to the wellbeing of the entire school community, reaffirming that together we can truly make a difference.

This Special Report provides guidance on how to talk to your child about mental health and engage in meaningful discussions.

Viking Café volunteers

We are fortunate to have dedicated parents like Juanita Wrigley and Kirsten Hanly generously contributing their time to our Viking Café. Juanita, whose sons are Connor and Churchie Old Boy Blake (2017), volunteers once a month. She finds it rewarding not only for the chance to see her son and his friends but also for the opportunity to meet other parents whose children are in the same year level as hers.

Kirsten, who volunteers alongside Juanita, has sons Caleb, Rory and Fraser at Churchie, and shares Juanita’s enthusiasm. She values the opportunity to engage with the school community and connect with new people. Kirsten notes, ‘It’s a wonderful way to contribute and stay in touch with what’s happening around the school.’ She also appreciates that the time commitment is manageable—only from morning tea to lunch—which makes it a convenient way to support the school while building new friendships with other parents.

We invite you to join Juanita and Kirsten in experiencing the sense of community that comes with volunteering at the Viking Café. Even a small contribution of time can make a significant impact.

Please contact the Tuckshop Volunteers Coordinator for more details if you can spare some time during the term to help in our busy tuckshops.

Music

As Term 3 comes to a close, it’s a great opportunity to reflect on the wonderful opportunities that are on offer to you at Churchie. The opportunity to perform solo at the Soiree to a warm and supportive audience as you seek improvement on your chosen instrument; or even the chance to challenge yourself at Churchie’s Best Solos with one of the best adjudicators in the nation in Simon Hewitt. To perform and share the stage with James Morrison and Darren Percival is a memory to be treasured and the Gala concert with its audio-visual extravaganza finishing in a massed orchestral arrangement of the Interstellar theme will also be a treasured memory.

These opportunities for the young men of Churchie do not happen without the immense support of our parent community and the dedication of our teaching staff. As we farewell our Senior Musicians (whilst asking them to return for Tri-Service Cadets and Speech Night performances in Term 4) and as we move into our new ensembles for the 2024/25 season, it’s a great time to reflect on the benefits of music. Below is an article from Dr Diana Tolmie on the benefits of music education, with a great focus on the humanitarian and mental health qualities.

Sheet Music

All Years 7 to 12 students with barcoded music are to return their original copies to the Textbook Room next to The Centenary Library lecture theatre. You will notice an overdue notice on this music. Those members of Morris Winds and Symphony Orchestra should retain their Speech Night and Tri-Service Cadet Parade music, including ‘Jupiter’, Interstellar and ‘American Barndance’.

Senior farewell

On Tuesday 10 September 2024, the end-of-season senior farewell took place in Magnus Quad with a spectacular gathering. The Senior Students were presented with cuff links from the Music Support Group and in return shared their favourite experiences and gave some sage advice to younger students of Churchie Music. Please take the time to read one of the responses from the senior students when asked what advice he would provide for a young musician at Churchie:

‘My advice for any current or future Churchie boy within music is something you’ve likely heard a thousand times and that is to take advantage of every opportunity you can, especially within cocurricular music. The experience you will gain from joining that extra ensemble and attending that extra competition or concert will be monumental and every time you turn up to a rehearsal in the morning, you will feel that bit more content with the progress you are making. In simple terms, what you put in is what you get out.’

The night concluded with a huge thank you to the Music Support Group, who we would simply not be able to do without and our dedicated music staff before a Massed Orchestral performance of Interstellar in Morris Hall from the amazing Gala concert. Thank you to everyone who came along to attend and celebrate what has been one of the best music seasons yet.

We look forward to seeing the Seniors at Tri-Service Cadets and Speech Night for their final performances in Term 4, whilst we reform ensembles for the new season ahead.

Primary Inter-School Chess Results: Brisbane South, Term 3, 2024

A sea of blue and grey descended upon Citipointe Christian College this week as Churchie contested the Term 3 instalment of the Brisbane South Primary Inter-School Chess competition. A total of 39 Churchie boys competed across four of the five divisions, composing nine teams of four and one team of three. Churchie once again soared to great heights at this term’s inter-school event.

In the Premier Division, the Churchie 1 team, consisting of Zeqi Xing, Owen Shen, Yuwei Wang and Austin Li, eclipsed the competition with a gold-medal-winning performance, scoring 26 out of 28 games. This result reprises their first-place performances from Term 1 and Term 2, cementing their position as the pre-eminent primary chess team in the region. The Churchie 2 team achieved an excellent bronze medal with a score of 17.5/28. Both teams have qualified for the upcoming Queensland Inter-School Chess State Finals to be held at Gregory Terrace, in October.

Other Churchie teams also performed admirably. The Churchie 3 team won gold in the A Division with a score of 19.5/28, while Churchie 7 secured another gold in the B Division. Many other teams achieved commendable results, with Churchie 6 finishing equal 6th in the B Division. All but one Churchie team placed in the top three of their respective divisions.

Individually, Austin Li earned gold in the Premier Division with a perfect score of 7/7. He was one of only two players out of 263 to achieve this feat, the other being Leonard Smerdon – the son of Churchie Old Boy and chess captain, Grandmaster Dr David Smerdon – in the D Division. Zeqi Xing and Owen Shen finished in equal second place in the Premier Division with 6.5/7, while Yuwei Wang placed 5th. In the A Division, Zhibin Yan won outright with 6/7 and Dhruv Bansal finished equal 4th. Alan Wu finished equal 3rd in the B Division with 5.5/7 and Sidharth Arora and Adeshwar Dhillon placed equal 6th.

The boys’ exceptional results reflect their hard work, dedication and the nurturing pastoral care that distinguishes Churchie Chess. Their sportsmanship and dignity throughout the event were exemplary and they are a credit to themselves and the School. Congratulations to all prize winners and competitors.

Families new to the School may not see ‘myVIPs’ yet, as new student ID photos are still to be processed in the system. However, you can still browse the galleries.

Watch the video below to learn how to use Pixevety.

For more information visit the Pixevety page on myChurchie or email news@churchie.com.au.
