From the Deputy Headmaster

Dear boys, parents and staff

As we enter the heart of Term 3, the rhythm of school life is in full swing, marked by academic milestones, cocurricular commitments and important preparations for the future. It’s a time of growth, reflection and connection as we work together to achieve our best.

Communication

myChurchie, our central communications platform, is designed to give you quick access to a wide range of critical information, all in one place. Personalisation options allow you to manage notifications, set up daily digest emails and modify group settings to tailor the flow of information to meet your needs. You can also filter and sync Churchie’s calendar via myEvents with your own personal calendar, so you don’t have to worry about missing important dates or juggling multiple platforms.

For those who haven’t yet downloaded it, the myChurchie app (available via myChurchie) also provides convenient mobile access to the life of the School, ensuring you’re always connected.

If parents would like some help with the functionality of myChurchie, or guidance on how to change their settings to suit their needs, the myChurchie Help resource found via the Parent Services menu may be of assistance.

Learning behaviour ratings

In the Senior School, all teachers have now published their initial Semester 2 Learning Behaviours. Parents and students can find this individual feedback via the Grades feature in myChurchie, under the ‘[LBS2] LB and Goals – Semester 2’ item for each subject. Largely in response to their teachers’ learning behaviour ratings, students are being encouraged to reflect and improve in targeted areas wherever necessary. As always, learning behaviour ratings are subject to change prior to the publication of formal reports, helping to provide more real-time feedback on student engagement and success over time.

Study Hub and examinations

Term 3 examinations have started for our Year 12 IB students and will be underway for many other boys across the School in the coming weeks. We particularly think of our Year 12 boys who are building towards their external QCE and IB examinations in Term 4. Huge gains are still possible from this point, so the upcoming mock examinations are enormously valuable.

A reminder that Study Hub provides all Year 7 to 12 students with complimentary support in all subject areas, led by senior academic leaders, staff and talented Churchie Old Boys. Our schedule is available via the Academic tile in myChurchie.

Richard Wheeldon
Deputy Headmaster

Book Week

The theme for Book Week 2024 is ‘reading is magic’!  It’s a celebration of the enchanting power of books to transport minds, foster curiosity about the wonders in our world and the wonderful journey books allow us to enjoy. During this week, schools, libraries and community organisations come together to celebrate children’s literature. Whether it’s through displays, activities, events or Book Week parades, the magic of reading takes centre stage.

Reading took centre stage on Monday morning with our annual Book Week parade. This year, we brought the Prep School together, along with some special guests from Oakland Childcare. Our boys did a wonderful job bringing characters from their favourite books to life. The Campbell Centre was filled with a myriad of characters from favourite books, such as Harry Potter, Where’s Wally?,  Dog Man, Willy Wonka, Mr Men, and a variety of sporting superstars. The staff were not to be outdone, as all our teachers embraced the spirit of Book Week and dressed as their favourite characters. Our Oakland Childcare friends also joined in the celebrations, enjoying the fun in their costumes as well.

As you can see from the images from the day, it was truly a celebration of the magic of reading and a wonderful Prep School community event. Thank you to Mrs Findlay, Mrs Booth and Mrs Hetherington for their organisation of this special school event.

Prep value of the week: courage

Courage is personal bravery in the face of fear. It involves doing what needs to be done even when it’s hard or scary. Courage is moving ahead even when you feel like giving up. You may need courage when you try new things. Courage is admitting mistakes and then doing the right thing. Courage is the strength in your heart.

Attribute of the week: inquirers

Inquirers have a natural curiosity and learn to acquire the skills necessary to conduct inquiry and research, showing independence in learning. You actively enjoy learning, and this love of learning will be sustained throughout your life.

Author visit for Book Week

Considering the Book Week them ‘reading is magic’, Sarah Armstrong, author of Big Magic and Magic Awry was a natural choice. The boys in Years 3–6 were treated to a highly engaging visit, in which Sarah spoke about her transition from journalist to author and gave the boys a teaser of her new novel coming out next year. Since Big Magic is set in a travelling circus, volunteer students (and even a couple of teachers) took part in some circus tricks, such as juggling and hula hooping.

Reception

Last Tuesday, Prep year students from St Margaret’s visited the Reception boys for a morning of activities and fun. It was a wonderful event (despite the weather) that allowed Churchie boys and St Margaret’s girls to continue the collaboration between our two schools. The children made puppets, watched a puppet show, and sang and danced to a song which was a collaboration of both music teachers. The boys met the girls at the bus with an umbrella and displayed our manner of the week, chivalry, as they walked them into our classrooms. We were so proud of the way the boys conducted themselves. We had many ‘little sisters’ this year, which made the day even more special. We look forward to visiting St Margaret’s next year for another wonderful morning of fun and friendship.

Year 9 Aspiring Leaders’ Summit 2024

Churchie’s Year 9 Aspiring Leaders’ Summit was hosted at The Centenary Library on Friday 10 August. Once again, the summit involved students from both Churchie and St Margaret’s, who completed a full day of workshops unpacking leadership theory and skills through emotional intelligence (EI), wellbeing, resilience, decision-making and teamwork frameworks.

Summit attendees represented each day and boarding house for this one-day extension event, based on their effort and engagement across a six-month Aspiring Leaders’ coursework programme facilitated for all Year 9 students during weekly wellbeing lessons across Term 2 and Term 3. The coursework and summit form a component of the Year 9 wellbeing programme at Churchie, having been introduced for the first time in 2020 by Natassja Thorpe and James Thorpe.

The summit involved several internal and external providers:

  • Brook Monahan – Founder and Managing Director of Mosaic Property Group, reflected on his personal leadership journey and applying lessons from the Daily Stoic.
  • Alison Lalieu – Certified Dare to Lead facilitator, executive neuro coach and emotional intelligence certified coach, unpacked learnings from the corporate sector.
  • David Lalieu – Breathwork practitioner, provided students with mindfulness techniques to access self-awareness.
  • James Thorpe – English teacher at Churchie, presented on ‘The Character Equation: Why Your Values Need Behaviours’.
  • Clayton Kelly – Director of service at Churchie, presented on service-leadership programmes at schools.
  • Mitch Rosenlund – Nansen housemaster at Churchie, presented on wellbeing-leadership programmes at schools.

A post-summit reflection from Alison Lalieu highlighted several key points from Brook Monahan’s opening speech: https://courageousleadershiphub.com.au/character-is-fate/

Thank you to all day and boarding housemasters for teaching the Aspiring Leaders’ wellbeing coursework across Term 2 and Term 3.

IB Languages – A Window to the World

‘One language sets you in a corridor for life. Two languages open every door along the way.’ – Frank Smith

One aspect of the IB Diploma Programme that makes it unique is that it requires students to learn another language. The IB wants its students to be internationally minded, and learning a second language helps students develop their knowledge and understanding of other cultures. In our global community, those students who can understand, speak and appreciate languages other than their own will be at a distinct advantage in their chosen career, whether it be in the world of finance, business and economics, engineering, medicine, law or the creative arts.

At Churchie, we offer four languages: French, Japanese, Mandarin and Spanish. Students may continue with the language that they studied in Years 7 to 10, or they are able to select a language they haven’t studied before. The IB divides language study into two courses: ab initio (to develop basic communication skills) and Language B (to enhance communication skills).

One aspect of the language course is the individual oral. Students are given a stimulus picture and have 15 minutes to prepare for a discussion that they then undertake with their teacher. Last week, the Year 12 students completed their official assessment.

As Dean of the IB Diploma Programme, it has been wonderful to see students work collaboratively in groups, attend extra tutorial sessions on offer and diligently attend to their language study. A huge thank you to the language teachers, Mr Dyer, Madame Washington, Ms Edwards-Davis, Ms Xu and Mr Bergas Paz, for their encouragement, expertise and enthusiasm for their craft.

Junior Science Olympiad Spring School

Congratulations to Owen Yu in Year 9 who was the first Churchie student selected for the Junior Science Olympiad (JSO) Spring School. Since achieving a high distinction in the Junior Science Olympiad last year, Owen has been part of a 55-person nationwide training squad – he has studied several units across science disciplines and completed two progress exams. Owen is now among just 24 students invited to participate in the Spring School. A fantastic achievement.

RoboCup Junior State Championships

Six teams from Churchie participated in the RoboCup Junior state round at UQ. Teams competed in a range of robotics divisions including performance, rescue line, rescue maze, and standard and lightweight soccer. Congratulations to Team Zenith, led by Dario Lim, who won the Lightweight Soccer final for the second year in a row.

Year 9 Biggs and Nansen House Outdoor Education Camp

The recent outdoor education camp for students in Biggs and Nansen offered an exciting blend of adventure and learning. Over the course of five days, participants engaged in a variety of activities designed to facilitate growth and autonomy. Hiking through the sandy trails of Cooloola National Park allowed them to connect with nature and develop group management techniques. Kayaking on the serene Upper Noosa River challenged their skills and provided a refreshing experience. Rock climbing presented both physical and mental challenges, enhancing their problem-solving abilities and self-confidence. The final camp for Term 3 was a great success despite a touch of inclement weather and it left the boys with lasting memories and newfound skills.

Gala

The 2024 Gala took the event to a new level with captivating visuals, costumes, dramatic battles and the most spectacular finale to date. Beginning with stalls and markets in Founders Court, the audience was greeted with a drink on arrival and enjoyed pre-show entertainment from Eagle Guitars, Sax Quartet, Percussion Ensemble and Twisted Metal.

The formal proceedings began with special effects transforming Magnus Quad into a scene from Dune, featuring our school marshals, with references to Interstellar that highlighted our music captains. A lightsaber battle between Guy Gorwood (Year 12) and Thomas Dwyer (Year 12) down the centre aisle set the perfect atmosphere for the MC script to begin. Concert Band challenged themselves with a Star Wars medley conducted by Mr Davison using a lightsaber as his baton. Jensen Winds featured a tribute to space and time with an exciting new work, entitled Cosmos. Churchie Guitars added special effects using spoons in their arrangement the Doctor Who theme by Mr Neville. Churchie Strings shocked the audience with screaming and growling in their zombie apocalypse space tribute Curse of the Rosin Eating Zombies. Chamber Strings 1 stole the show with their comment on the seasons of time, performing October by Eric Whitacre and Vivaldi’s‘Winter’, featuring an extraordinary solo by lead violinist Eric Kim (Year 11). Chamber Strings 2 impressed with a stunning rendition of Lotus by Yukiko Nishimura, expressing the time theme beautifully.

Senior Voices moved in sync and in costume to the dark and eerie theme of Halo, before breaking into David Bowie’s ‘Space Oddity’. It was wonderful to hear the full chorus, with many enthusiastic Year 7s joining the group in 2024—keep up the great work, Senior Voices. Morris Wind Symphony followed a cameo MC introduction from Back to The Future’s ‘Doc Brown’ with a rendition of the Back to the Future theme. The highlight of their set was Noad D Taylor’s Interstellar, featuring oscillating time signatures, Lydian tonalities and the use of the octatonic scale. Symphony Orchestra delivered perhaps their best performance of Holst’s ‘Jupiter’ from The Planets, with carefully negotiated transitions under the baton of Mr Hooper.

Finally, Senior Voices, Morris Winds and Symphony Orchestra combined to perform an arrangement of Hans Zimmer’s Interstellar theme. Every one of the 130 members played under sconce lights reminiscent of stars before a credit roll in the style of Star Wars closed out the night on the big screen. An enormous and heartfelt thank you to all the parents, students and staff who made the night such a success, particularly Ms Oxenford for her creative direction and tireless video editing and production. Auditions

Audition music for 2025 ensembles is now available on myChurchie. Please take the time to consult your tutor about the best excerpt to perform and the best selection for your own choice. You may wish to use your soiree piece and dedicate your time to perfecting the excerpt. Your tutor will also be able to assist you with any other questions about the process. Upload recordings are due by the end of Week 7 to allow for new ensembles to begin in Term 4, 2024. If you are successful in your audition for a premier ensemble, you will be expected to attend Music Camp from 18 to 20 October 2024, so please save the date. Musicfest

Congratulations to Viking Vocals 1, Concert Band and Jensen Winds on their recent success at Musicfest. Viking Vocals were awarded a Gold Award after an outstanding performance at Brisbane State High School. The group demonstrated versatility by performing a set piece in a more regal style than their usual jazz acapella, which reflects their commitment to learning and openness to all musical genres.

Concert Band also received a Gold Award, their first ever, in what was a very challenging session with Dr McWilliams from Yamaha, who held the standards of the criteria to account. He was particularly impressed with the group’s articulation, precisely delivering note durations and volumes with a balanced ensemble approach—well done, Concert Band!

Jensen Wind Symphony received a Silver Award after delivering an amazing performance of Lord of the Rings, followed by a challenging set piece. The adjudicator was particularly complimentary of the full ensemble sound and instrumentation, which created all the colourful sounds of the orchestration. It was an incredibly fine line between silver and gold, as is often the case at an adjudicated event.

All the ensembles gleaned much from the adjudication and the opportunity to improve in 2025 is certainly not lost on the ensembles and their conductors.

Basketball

Round 6 was always going to be a true test of our programme strength, as the depth of Brisbane State High School (BSHS), particularly in Years 7 and 8 was evident by the number of undefeated teams from both BSHS and Churchie. The 37 teams still eligible to finish first in their division, and our 40 teams in total knew it would be a tall task.

What was very impressive to see was the multiple shows of sportsmanship and the way in which games were played across both venues. Numerous tight games, for example, the 8B and 10B teams, became Churchie wins due to a mixture of game planning, resilience and character shown. The made lay-ups didn’t hurt either.

On the day, we maintained 36 teams in the running to win their competition with just two rounds to go. Some of the impressive wins can be seen in the Churchie Basketball Scoreboard; however, notable mentions include the 9D team’s 57–12 victory in a great showing of Churchie style basketball, the 11C team’s commanding 67–15 win, as well as the 7E boys taking out their contest in similar fashion, 66–11.

As advertised last week, the new system for nominating to play the Term 4/1 season for Vikings Club Basketball is in place. Please complete this by the deadline on 28 August if you intend to play across Term 4/1 with Vikings. More information is available on the Vikings page within myChurchie.

Good luck to all teams this weekend, and I look forward to seeing our boys, parents and coaches continuing to show the high standard of sportsmanship and conduct as we finish the season and head towards the Basketball Awards Dinner for boys in Years 7 to 12, and the Vikings Presentation Day for those not in the Years 7 to 12 programme.

First V report

Part of last weekend’s GPS Basketball story was whether the First V could continue their winning streak against a very strong Brisbane State High School outfit.

The game did not disappoint, with a strong start from Churchie behind the play of Noah Kirk, Nash Harding, Kurt Siwek, Andrew Watene and Maxim Ure turned around by a barrage three-pointers by BSHS. It was 43–40 at halftime—and the game and the premiership—were in question. The third quarter was one of the best of the First V season, and the 25–11 scoreline in that term set up the 87–72 victory. This week ahead will be a special game for the First V in the Sir John Pidgeon Sports Complex, with the chance to put their hand firmly on the GPS premiership trophy for the first time since 2020.

Please join the many boys and families at 12:15 pm this Saturday in the Sir John Pidgeon Sports Complex to witness what could be a historic game for the First V.

Chess

Round six of the 2024 GPS Chess season saw Churchie travel to face the formidable Brisbane State High School for some challenging matches. It was a competitive round, with Churchie securing victories in five teams, drawing four and losing four. This resulted in a narrow overall victory. Notably, each team could have managed to win all their games, highlighting our opponents’ high level of competition.

This week marks our final home round of the season, where we will host Ipswich Grammar School. Additionally, our Second Chance tournament will run for the last time, providing an opportunity for those not involved in the main games.

The teams for The Southport School will be picked this Thursday, as our final round of Chess is on Thursday 29 August at The Southport School.

We will be leaving Churchie at 2 pm and returning around 8:30 pm.

Max Condon
Director of Chess

Rugby

Last weekend saw Churchie play Brisbane State High School in round six. Brisbane State High have been performing well this year, and it was a highly anticipated round of fixtures between the two schools, particularly the First XV match-up.

Our junior teams faced off against some very athletic BSHS teams and had to toil hard all day to score points, particularly in the windy conditions. Churchie created plenty of opportunities but at times were let down with missed chances or turnovers that were punished with long-range tries by the dangerous BSHS backline.

Overall, there were 11 games played between the two schools, with Churchie recording four victories and six losses. The mighty U12 B team continued their undefeated run with a nail-biting 12-all draw against GT. Well done to those boys and their coaches.

This weekend, we are hosting IGS at Churchie for our final home game of the season. We have many teams in the supplementary draw this week, so please check the draw closely.

First XV report

In the Firsts match, the intensity was palpable from the start. Churchie showcased its prowess early on with a well-executed maul try, setting the tone for an exciting game. State High, however, responded with tenacity, utilising close-quarter pick-and-go plays to secure crucial points. The first half ended with State High leading 14-7.

As the second half commenced, State High continued their momentum, scoring early tries to extend their lead. Churchie, undeterred, fought back with a brilliantly executed set-piece try from a scrum, with Oliver Chancellor’s try under the posts injecting renewed energy into the team. Churchie’s relentless forward play and hard carries allowed them to narrow the gap, displaying their resilience and determination.

Despite Churchie’s valiant efforts, State High sealed the victory with a final play, concluding the match with a scoreline of 21-38. The match was a testament to the skill and sportsmanship displayed by both teams. Churchie’s upcoming home game against Ipswich Grammar promises to be another thrilling encounter.

Director of Rugby

Sporting achievements

Congratulations to the following students who have been successful in the following sporting pursuits.

Rowing

Australian Coastal Rowing and Beach Sprint Championships

Over the weekend, two students, Jack Townson and Shaun Campbell, proudly represented their rowing club in the Australian Coastal Rowing and Beach Sprint Championships at Mooloolaba Beach. This was the first time both athletes had competed in a coastal rowing regatta, and it proved to be an exciting experience.

Early in the competition, the close margins became apparent when they narrowly missed winning a final race by just 1.2 seconds. However, as the regatta progressed, they adapted to the challenging conditions and showed great improvement. Their hard work paid off as they claimed victory in the Under 19 Mixed Quad, secured second place in the Under 19 Men’s Double, and both finished on the podium for the Under 19 Mixed Double.

We are proud of Jack and Shaun for their performance. Coastal Rowing as a sport will make its Olympic Games debut in LA 2028.

the churchie emerging art prize

Australia’s most diverse art prize for emerging contemporary artists, the churchie emerging art prize (‘the churchie’), has officially opened entries for 2024. This national prize invites early-career artists to enter for a chance to exhibit and be considered for awards totalling over $40,000. Entries are open to all emerging Australian artists over 18, regardless of age, practice or medium.

The call for entries will run until 16 September, and industry experts will be searching for diverse, innovative, and unique pieces that showcase Australian contemporary art in practice. These works will feature at the Finalist’s Exhibition from 22 to 30 November, hosted at Metro Arts for the first time.

This year, the major prize, sponsored by BSPN Architecture, has doubled to $30,000, matching the increased excitement and engagement for the emerging artist award. Finalists will also be considered for a $5,000 Special Commendation award by Fardoulys Constructions, two Commendations valued at $1,500 each sponsored by A1 Frames, and a People’s Choice Prize valued at $3,000.

Now in its 37th year, ‘the churchie’ is Australia’s longest-running prize for emerging artists and provides an exceptional platform for career opportunities, education and direct engagement with the broader arts community.

The exhibition will take place at Metro Arts this November, continuing the legacy of promoting innovation and excellence across art, as well as supporting the future of Australian contemporary arts practice.

Metro Arts Executive Director Genevieve Trace says initiatives such as ‘the churchie’ play a crucial role in championing emerging artists.

‘It’s wonderful to provide opportunities for emerging artists to be showcased and appreciated and we are thrilled to be that springboard for the very first time this year,’

Ms Trace said.

‘The award is synonymous with Metro Arts’ mission to discover new artists, talents and
contemporary art and hope to see an extensive finalist exhibition across all our presentation spaces this year.’
